Twenty-Two

“Got to dig the bullet out. That’s the only thing I can think of that’s preventing the healing.” Easton paced beside Jayden. We’d placed him on a slab of granite near the lake. “Trinity, your hands are small. Can you handle it?”

“Yes. I’ve done this before with Devon. He wasn’t able to heal when the bullet was inside him either.”

Easton handed me a scalpel. “I’ll try to numb him up a little.” He dug into his bag.

August came up beside me. “I can help. I’ve studied anatomy a little.” He leaned over and touched around the wound. Jayden grunted but kept his focus on me.

I’d stay calm for him.

I’d be his strength.

“Here. It’s through his ninth and tenth rib.” He pointed to Jayden’s swollen red flesh. There was only a tiny hole there, but blood poured out of it like a geyser. “Stay away from down here.” He pointed about three inches toward the center of his stomach. “You’re getting to some serious organs and an artery if you head in this direction. Cut the bullet hole longer and stick your fingers in there.”

I nodded, gulping down the nerves. Easton stepped in with a needle and injected the site.

“Did that guy make it?” Someone asked from the circle around us. “The human who shot Jayden?”

“Yes.” August answered. “He’s guarded over at the main area. We’ll deal with him next.”

I’d severed his hand. He couldn’t be very well off. Unless he could heal from that.

I tuned out all the whispers about how they’d killed all the humans except a few and steadied my hand.

“Okay Trin,” August said.

I leaned over Jayden, knife poised to make the incision a little bigger for me to get my fingers in there. He nodded and Catherine dabbed at his sweaty forehead.

I sliced the skin open about a half inch and Jayden’s groan nearly killed me. His agony hit me like a wrecking ball collapsing a building. My knees went weak, but I pushed it back. I had to. I had to save him.

“Good,” August said. “Try now.”

I slid my finger into Jayden’s hot flesh. He flinched, his stomach clenched, but he didn’t bellow. Not like that weakling human I’d battled. No, my Jayden was strong.

My fingertip met something smooth. I forced the cut open wider. “There. I see it.”

I looked to the side and drew in a fresh breath before turning back to the gruesome sight. Holding the scalpel as steady as I could, I worked it into the small space to the other side of the bullet. Without something to pull it out, I needed to ease it out this way.

“Perfect. Nice and slow, Trin,” August said, leaning over, dabbing at the blood. “I wish I had some suction for you to get the blood out.”

“I feel it.” I had ahold of the foreign object in my Jayden’s body.

Finally, the bullet was out. I tossed that thing to the ground along with the scalpel and cupped Jayden’s face. He stared up at me with glazed eyes and offered me a heavy-lidded blink.
